SØHØJLANDET

The lake highlands are the highest lying area in Denmark and at the same time the area with the highest density of lakes. The area is located between the central Jutland cities Silkeborg, Hammel, Aarhus and Horsens. To the east it is bounded by Aarhus Bay, to the west by the Jutland ridge. To the north and south, it is mainly the area between Silkeborg and Skanderborg that has given its name to the Søhøjlandet, or the Central Jutland Søhøjland.

The landscape in Søhøjlandet is characterized by large forests, heaths, small meadows and grasslands, surrounded by large hills and lakes that are connected to Gudenåen , Denmark's longest river. Salten Å also helps to mark the landscape. Many lakes in the area are of great biological interest, e.g. Slåensø , which is considered one of the cleanest lakes in Denmark. More than 30% of the area in the Søhøjlandet consists of forest, especially the Silkeborg forests.

Large parts of the Søhøjlandet are protected as Natura 2000 areas and bird protection areas .
